5 KOSHAS (layers) of the Body
According to Yoga our body is composed of
5 layers or sheaths known as Koshas
Annamaya Kosha
Annamaya kosha is the food body. Anna means food. What builds it is food and what we do with the physical body. It is like the hardware of our system.
Manomaya Kosha
Manomaya Kosha is the mental body. ‘Mana’ means the mind. It comprises of thoughts, emotions and all the mental processes, both conscious and unconscious. It is like the software of our system, without which nothing can function. What happens in the mental body affects the physical body and vice verse.
Pranamaya Kosha
Hardware and software cannot function without power. In order to function it needs to be plugged into quality power, which is the 3rd layer Energy body, pranamya kosha. ‘Prana’ means life energy. This energy body powers and drives the Annamaya Kosha and the Manomaya Kosha.
Vigyanamaya kosha
The fourth layer is called the Vignanamaya Kosha.‘Gnana’ means knowledge. ‘Vishesh Gnana’ or ‘vignana’ means extraordinary knowledge or knowledge of that which is beyond the sense perceptions. It is something that cannot be perceived with 5 senses. the first 3 layers can be perceived with the 5 senses, the last 2 layers cannot.

Anandamaya Kosha
The innermost layer is the anandamaya kosha loosely translated to Bliss body which when touched or reached keeps one in a constant state of blissfulness. It is beyond the physical nature.
